Loraas Environmental has announced that, due to changes in the recycled material resale market, post consumer plastic such as plastic bags, food wrap, and cellophane packaging will no longer be accepted in Kindersley's single stream recycling program as of April 1, 2018.

Ruebecca Fiddler, Manager, explained in a recent letter that changes to recycling regulations in China, the world's largest importer of recyclable material, have impacted the market to such a degree that Loraas is unable to continue accepting post-consumer plastic film that often sticks to paper products and compromises the sale of that material as well.

"Post-Consumer plastic film was always a difficult commodity to find a mill for, and often was marketed at a net loss," Fiddler stated. "After months of stockpiling this material while we tried extensively to find another market for it we have come to the realization that we will have no choice but to start sending the plastic film we process to the landfill."

Kindersley residents are asked to be mindful of the new plastic film restrictions and to avoid putting plastic bags, food wrap, and other cellophane packaging into the blue recycle carts from this point on.
