Water quality tests conducted since installation of the Motherwell Reservoir Aeration System show a significant improvement to the quality of the reservoir water.

H2O Logistics reported the results of its June 9 tests in the reservoir showing that oxygen levels had increased in most samples taken, and in many cases were more than double those of test samples taken in the same locations on July 29, 2015 when the SolarBee aeration unit was installed. The results indicate levels of dissolved oxygen and alkalinity up to water depths of eight feet (8 ft.)

The aeration system was installed for the purpose of providing added circulation of water to assist in the control of harmful algae, and to reduce odor and toxicity issues.

Purchase of the aeration unit was made possible through the partnership of the Town of Kindersley, Kindersley Wildlife Federation, Kindersley Regional Park, and Walking Trail Committee, plus additional donations from individuals amounting to a total of more than $75,000.

“These results are very positive. Within less than a year, the quality of the water in Motherwell Reservoir has already improved and the system is producing the results we hoped for,” said Chief Administrative Officer Bernie Morton. “This is great news as we think long-term toward the development of the Motherwell Reservoir into a fully recreational water area in the future.”

While the aeration system has already produced positive results, the process of recirculating the water must continue. During this process unpleasant odors are expected as existing milfoil and algae is pull from the edges and bottom of the reservoir. Aeration experts have confirmed this is a normal part of the process as the water quality improves.

The Kindersley Wildlife Federation has already contributed additional investment in the reservoir by stocking it with fish and plans to construct a new fishing dock in the near future.
